Industrial Design Placement Opportunity

An amazing opportunity for a 3rd Year Industrial Design placement in Reykjavik, Iceland.

The Össur Design Center are looking to offer one student, the opportunity to work within their team for a full year to contribute to a range of design projects across the full business portfolio. Specifically, this role would predominantly support a key and ambitious human-centred, conceptual project currently underway.

This placement would be for the next academic year, namely Aug/Sept. 2023 until Aug/Sept. 2024 (or to dates that suit your course and circumstances).

The successful applicant would need to satisfy most or all of the following;

> Currently studying an Industrial or Product Design degree (or close equivalent) and looking for a 3rd year industrial placement. This would ideally be from within the UK but happy to consider any relevant applications.

> Have a good understanding of a relevant user-centred design process/framework and be able to demonstrate and explain appropriately completed work with a portfolio/casestudy.

> Understand how design research, insights, user journeys and other exploratory processes can be used to effectively inform design work and to show examples from past work.

> Be capable of modelling (relatively) complex forms in 3D CAD (SolidWorks/Rhino/Fusion preferred) with appropriate speed and confidence. This will be an expected and key part of the role.

> Be capable of translating 3D models into high impact renders using suitable visualisation software (KeyShot/Blender preferred) and having a good working knowledge of Photoshop.

> Have suitable and demonstrable sketching skills allowing you to communicate detailed ideas fluidly and effectively. Digital sketching is useful but not essential. Communication is the priority.

> Have a working knowledge of engineering principles and designing to accommodate electro-mechanical envelopes. You will be expected to work alongside and collaborate with engineering colleagues.

> Have a keen eye for presentation and graphic layout suitable for sharing design output to key stakeholders plus a good working knowledge of Powerpoint and InDesign.

> Be aware of and understand the functionality of tools like Mural and MidJourney in the early stages of design exploration. Some experience of these would be useful but not essential.

> Be confident in standing in front of others to present and discuss ideas, building on and contributing to concept thinking and participating in design sprints. Thinking on your feet.

> Be able to receive constructive feedback on work and respond positively.

This placement is an opportunity to work on some groundbreaking projects that genuinely deliver life changing benefits to the people that use them. There are few businesses that can honestly claim to change peoples’ lives and this is one of them. It is an amazing opportunity to not only be a part of a phenomenal project within a supportive business, but also to spend a year in one of the most beautiful countries on Earth.

This is not a flexible working arrangement. The successful applicant would be expected to relocate to Reykjavik for the duration of the placement and work within the Design Center studio. Applicants will be responsible for applying for a Residence Permit and Work Permit but Össur will support that application where necessary.

More details on permits can be found here

The successful applicant will receive a competitive placement salary and supported accommodation, subsistence and suitable equipment. These are still currently being defined but details will be shared with anyone who decides to apply.

Anyone interested, is encouraged to submit a portfolio, CV and cover letter to russell@fourbeards.co.uk with ‘ODC Placement’ as the subject heading.

Please ensure that your portfolio does not exceed 20Mb.

I will be acting on behalf of the Össur Design Center in early application shortlisting and interviewing. Once we have a shortlist, additional interviews will be arranged with the Head of The Design Center and key studio individuals to select the final candidate. In the first instance, I will be looking to UK Universities for candidates as I will be hoping to interview applicants F2F.

The application deadline is midnight on the 28th May 2023.

I look forward to hearing from you.
